Free Water

One feature I'm working on and will have live soon is a water pump..

Ok story: the OEM water pump started having issues so I put in a new onem, Old one still works but it needs some work (leaks in operation) so.....

I'll rig it to pump water from a container either in my car or on the ground,, Get a bladder (likely 40 gallons, but they make a 90) and pump away when I need to on boondock sites.

That said... I routinely haul 80 gallons of water when traveling, or less.. Depends on how long between water faucets.

I'm not so sure I'd want to fill at a Gas station but here is a thought.

Leave one day early, Spend one night, just one, in a campground NEAR your target.. Pay the 20-40 bucks, tank up, empty waste tanks (if needed) relax and finish the trip in the AM.

Personally... I'd haul water


ADVANTAGE to hauling your own water..... There is a condition often called Montezuma's Revenge.... The cause is often the difference in water between what you are used to and where you park.... I've had it.. Back in my part time days.

I use filters (Activatec charcoal plus PUR) and that minimizes it, but that's a STRONG argument for hauling your own water.

Fill at home or the last place that you have full hookups. The weight difference will not affect fuel mileage if that is your worry.

I actually find that funny when that happens. Ours will shoot a good amount of water out on a good sized curve. Once I had a buttwipe in a little car bothering me while we were driving, he'd speed up, slow down, cause me to get blocked in, etc. And once while he was going to pass me again, we went around a good corner and my water came out of the vent. You should have seen the look of fear in his eyes, I truly think he thought it was black water. He slowed way down and wouldn't pass me for a long ways until the road straightened out. I still can see his face to this day and it cracks me up.

Back on topic, we take fresh water with us as much as possible, we never know what kind of water we will get when we get to the campground. And we have really nice well water at home so my wife would rather take that along then get some chlorinated stuff. Plus its nice when you stop at a rest stop and use your own bathroom.

NOT a good idea. Just don't fill it quite so full.....and/or don't worry about it.

Impossible to answer that without knowing your specific destination.

And you can't always have it the way you want it.

For the first trip to a destination where I know there is no water connection, I always fill up before leaving home. That also allows for water use along the way if needed.

Agree with Old-Biscuit, just fill your tank before leaving. It is so much more convenient, than searching for water along the way. You will not notice any difference in towing by adding 550 lbs of water, unless you are already over loaded. I'd rather not have to fill water at a dump station upon arrival. It is nice to just proceed to my camp site, get set up, and relax.

Agree completely. :B Normally we have potable water available wherever we camp so I usually just make sure there's enough water in the trailer's fresh water holding tank to keep the system operational and get us through our first day of camping. However, very early or late in the season we sometimes find campground fresh water supplies turned off and winterized and in that case before we leave home I'll fill the trailer's tank completely and also fill the fresh water Aquatainers in the back of my truck, providing us with enough water to get through trip without worrying about our water supply. With an tow vehicle rated properly for towing our trailer there's little impact, whether carrying water or not.

Ranger Stations
Gas Stations
Fire Stations

You might have better luck if you told us where you were going. If it's around northwestern Vermont and the snow has melted by that time, PM me and I'll gladly let you take all the water you want from my well via a hose spigot. (Bonus: good tasting water!)

Most dump stations I've seen do have a potable water fill nearby, as korbe said.
