Fresh water tank drain valve broke off

When I just went out to try to drain & sanitize the FW tank the turn valve broke off in my hand. I managed to turn the valve open with pliers but I'd like to replace it. I'm sure I can get what I need at HD but I need to know how to get the old valve out & install a new one. I'm a woman so explain it in easy terms please.

  • get a good valve. the ones on mine are so bad they leak like crazy. like any thing else you get , cheap is not good. esp some of the plastic ones they don't seem to shut off very well.
  • Ok thanks for your help. When it quit draining I got underneath and voila! The outlet just unscrewed. Now to an RV store tomorrow for a new valve.
  • A little info on your RV might help. Type of RV, model/year, manufacturer and any other pertainant inf that you might know, would help.

EDIT: Just viewed your profile. Still have the 1991 Gulfstream 21' class C motorhome ?
  • There's a simple cap you can screw on the outlet of the valve. At least this will keep water from pouring out before you can replace the valve.
  • Some drain valves are threaded and some are barbed. Barbed: pull out old, push in replacment. Threaded: unscrew old, wrap teflon tape around threads of new, screw in new. Valterra makes replacements for both types.

It probably is not as easy as this sounds. If you pull out the old one and go to push in the new one and the whole pipe/tube moves away from you as you push.... Someone will probably add some wonderful trick here about how to do it.

Can you get the old one off? If yes, do that and buy one like it. You can probably get one on Amazon or at any store which carries RV replacement parts.

I tried a quick cruise around youtube and didn't find any videos, but there are probably some there.
