AS far as your question, yes you do need 12VDC power for control power. JMO
Another source for light (and to save the RV battery):
Use a cheap inverter (kind that plugs into the cigarette lighter outlet in your car or truck) - 12V DC to 110V AC, available everywhere.
Check the wattage capability - 60w will do fine.
Use a couple of clip-on lights with 15 watt bulbs and cheapie extension cord to get 'em where you need the light.
Start the car or truck occasionally to make sure the batt stays charged.
Save the flashlights for when it's time to turn off your clip-on lights and hit the sack.
