Around here, the name of the road can change 3-4 times in just a couple of miles. Usually the number stays the same, but the numbers aren't usually posted on the road name signs.
When you get downtown, any number street or letter street has 4 possible iterations (D Street NW, SW, NE, and SE). People from outside DC don't usually pay attention to what quadrant they are in. And, the main roads (by name) can bend, while there is a road that goes straight (but under a different name).
