I lived in New Orleans for a couple of years. Everyone there refers to "lakeside", "riverside", "west bank", etc., instead of N, S, E, or W. If you ask them "Is that south of here"?, they kind of get a look of panic as they try to visualize. They simply don't think in terms of direction in that town.
In their defense, if you pull up a map of New Orleans and suburbs, you can see why giving directions can be somewhat perplexing. Even more perplexing is receiving those directions...!!
