The DW can't know east from south without a compass. The DD can't even with a compass - as least her daughter can.
Then you have situations like New Orleans - as mentioned above all roads run in at least three directions.
Around the Dallas we have a saying
"All directions begin with - Get on Beltline - a road that runs in all directions with no beginning or end."
The 120 mile trip along Beltline as it circles Dallas is actually a quite interesting way to spend a Saturday.
