In my case it shouldn't be too difficult. The existing access panel is just a 1x2 frame with 1x2 slats at 45 degrees. I'm thinking I can build a frame of the same material and back it with 1/4" plywood. then cut a large hole and place a cold air return vent over it to look somewhat nice, and cut in a round duct for the vent line to blow hot in to the kitchen.
In that image, the furnace is under the pantry. The cold air return is on the kitchen side of the pantry, so that's what I'd be replacing.
I imagine this will solve all my problems.
