Hello,I assume that you have the same problem in the US as we have in Europe, when you arrive at the filling station? At which side is the filling cap? Especially if you have 2 cars with different filling sides.I found the answer on the www by accident and it is SOOO easy...Look at your fuel gauge and you'll see. :)Filling on the left: click here.Filling on the right: click here.I'm kinda ashamed that I'm fueling cars for more than 20 years and I have never noticed this. :SIf there's no arrow: look at the side of the hose on the icon.

Many stations have longer hoses that will reach either side and most cars fill in the back so the hose easily reaches either side.My MH will fill from either side. :C

Never noticed. The filler cap is usually on the drivers side. My Toyota Yaris is RIGHT HAND drive. The cap is on the left side.I assume that the majority of that model was built for the LEFT HAND drive market sharing the same body.Checked my 2004 Yaris today. Danged if there isn't a little pointer that lights up. Never noticed it before.

I know about the arrows but I've never noticed the hose on the icon corresponding to the tank fill. Will check it out! Yes, it's stupid of the manufacturers to put the fill on the passenger side!

Too Funny. I never noticed either. When did they start doing this???

Not all cars have the arrow. Especially the older ones did not.

The filler is usually on the opposite side of the exhaust. So all you need to do is get out, look at which side the exhaust is on, and proceed accordingly.

Yeah, I've known about the dash icon for many years.

I never considered this to be a problem in all the years I've been driving. :h
My biggest concern has been whether or not I had enough fuel. I remembered where the filler was. :?

I've read at least 10 manuals, but none have mentioned the arrow. Not all left hand driven cars have the cap at the same side, like someone mentioned. And not even all models of a brand are the same. We drive a ford Fiesta and the cap is on the left. A friend of mine drives a ford s-max and the cap is on the right.

I may be driving an older car for a long time. I have made it a point when car shopping, the filler has to be on the drivers side.

1946 Rootes Hillman: Passenger side. Must have changed after that. 1945 Willys Jeep: tank right under driver seat. Filler cap there too. BOOM!!!!

I seem to member fuel gauge use to be placed on same side of steering wheel fuel fill was on.
I was told that VW put fuel on curb side for safety reason. That way you would not be on traffic side in case you had to add fuel on a roadway.

Most cars have had those arrows since he mid 1990's, some earlier. They were not needed in the 1970's and prior. Back then you'd drive up to the pump, a bell would go ding-ding to indicate you've arrived and 1 or 2 people would run out, fill your tank, wash your windows and check your oil.
