Below is a link to a Canadian Border website that lets you know what food you can bring. Generally there are very few exclusions for personal imports. There is very little that you can't bring in!!
For instance the 250 KG (551 lbs) per person of fresh fruits and vegetables you can bring with you should last for an extended visit.
The list can change daily but the website is updated with the latest info.
By the way the high produce prices are generally in winter and spring. If you are here in the summer the favourable exchange rate for US dollars will offset higher prices.
