Yes I do get it, the people that don't or never have owned a diesel not thinking about which pump they're using. I probably never gave it to much thought either until I owned a diesel. But once you own a diesel does get a little frustrating especially when they give you dumb looks. Now that I own one I am very aware when I fill up my wife's car.

When someone gets gas at a combination pump they might be blocking ONE Diesel pump.
When you pull in to that same style pump to get diesel with you big old trailer you are blocking 2,3 or up to all 4 pumps.
Does that make you stupid? Unaware? Uncaring?
No it makes you a customer who is getting fuel just like the person getting gas.
I disagree completely with your characterization of the problem. The far more egregious act is sitting in your car on the phone after fueling and paying and still blocking the pump completely oblivious to all around you.
There is a difference between not having a choice to block the pumps when you have a trailer in tow versus having several open pumps that you can choose from and not blocking the only diesel pump. Again, I'm not mad at them as I'm sure the majority of the time they are not aware of what they are doing.
And back to blocking the pumps with the trailer, I can only think of one time in all my years of camping of ever doing that. By the time I start running low on fuel it's usually time to call it a day or I am most likely at my destination anyway. That's when I will try my best to fuel up is when I am on hitched from the trailer. I avoid like the plague trying to fuel up at a regular gas station with my trailer, both for my sake and others.
