My family was discussing (ranting) about this just the other day. I for one, would pay higher prices for certain items if they would last like they used to. The discussion started around my parents' toaster that takes several presses to make the lever stay down. The stupid thing wore out. The thing is, it was a wedding present they received and they've been married almost 53 years!
Contrast that with 1-2 year old refrigerators that have failed compressors, dishwashers with circuit boards that fail because they're mounted in the path of constant steam when you open the door and washing machines with water temperature sensors. How about just picking the cold hose, the hot hose or both for warm?
I realize technology is added to offer features but much of it is also to save energy. It seems foolish to chase a little energy savings but create so much throw-away waste in the process.
Modern manufacturing processes have improved the reliability of many things but at least with the old stuff you could replace the belt, bearing or switch without too much trouble.
