Generator Db how loud is it?

I fully understand that the Yamaha and Honda generators are the Gold Star for Rvers.

We have been RVing for 8 seasons without a generator (Solar is great), but friends bought Champion 2000 from Costco last year. The price looks good to me and the Db do not seem to be too far off a Honda of the same size. 58Db.

The friend's genny did not seem loud to me. Certainly not as loud as a construction genny.

Please share your thoughts.

I will not be running AC of the microwave, just keeping the batteries charged when we are camping in the trees (most our camping is in Foresrty Sites).

Most of the invertor generators are fairly close that is one or two DB off a honda or yahama.. I seriously doubt you'd notice the difference in volume.

However I will caution that some of them (Far as I know NOT Champion) the sound is not louder..... on a meter,,, but due to the way it operates it is much more annoying. (Different envelope wave form....Much sharper sound,,,Sawtooth wave instead of sine..NOT the sound wave but the sound envelope waveform).

Last weekend, we camped in a state park, and it never failed. A guy next to us would fire off his contractor's generator at 5pm and run it until 9pm. You couldn't hold a conversation outside with it running. So much for sitting around a quiet campfire and enjoying the great outdoors. With my ticker problems, it's not worth getting into a confrontation with someone. It there had been another campsite open, I'd have moved in a flash.

It's the 'all about me' attitude.
It's 'their' generator and they will run it anytime they want....
You are correct, it's not worth a confrontation. The person will not understand what it is they are doing wrong. :(

I'm a genset owner and agree with you both completely. I've been determined to not be one of "those people" and wouldn't consider using anything but an inverter genset when camping ... yet as is, they're still too noisy for my comfort level. I've found that running mine in the back of my Avalanche helps reduce the sound level quite a bit but only if the rear cargo compartment is completely closed up. That then leads to overheating problems so I built a vented lid that allows fresh air to be drawn into the compartment and exhaust fumes to be vented out, but even then it's still too noisy for me. Recently I built a low cost noise reduction box and found that it does further reduce the noise level and when sitting within the truck's closed up cargo compartment overall noise level with the genset running full tilt is reduced to a mild hum that pretty well disappears by about 20' or so away from the truck. About the only thing further I think I can do now is to spend another $200 to replace the box liner with proper noise reducing marine grade foam but I want to try this out first a few times this season before I invest any more $$ in this project.

Hardly. :E The Honda EU2000i is rated from 53 to 59 dbA @ 23' and having owned two of them I can tell you there's a HUGE difference in noise level when running it on ECO mode at it's slowest speed and full tilt when it's under a heavy load ... and a Yamaha EF2000iS or Champion inverter genset aren't any better. There's also a HUGE difference between 53 dbA and the class leading EU3000iS's ECO mode noise rating of just 49 dbA - significantly quieter still. Most will just park their so-called "quiet" inverter genset on their campsite somewhere and call it "quiet", but calling it that doesn't make it so. The fact is it's a gas engine that makes noise that can easily be heard ... to abate this as much as I can I run mine in the back of my Avalanche, adding a vented lid so I can close the tail gate. In addition I also built a noise reduction box in which the genset itself sits so in combination the end result is MUCH quieter ... regardless, it CAN still be heard running.

Champion inverter gennys have a big following and seem to be a very good value. I would not hesitate to give one a try. Folks say customer support is good too and parts are available if ever needed.

The Champion would be just fine. You might want to look at the Champion 3100. People have bought them for $699. They are also large enough to run the A/C and they are quiet.

The Champion 2000 is large enough to run the microwave and is quiet. If you don't need A/C the 2000 would be a good value.

WHAT DID YOU SAY? I COULD NOT HEAR YOU! :@

  • you'll be happy with the Champion, it's only slightly louder but it's reported to be a different type of sound, from the H & Y ones.
it should run your microwave too, just not the a/c.

if you went to the Tech Issues section here, there's a Champion 2000 thread that's thousands of posts long.

a simple search there will give you months of reading and reviews.

  • 58db is pretty quiet. The Champions are really starting to catch up with Honda and Yamaha it seems.

What I usually do is ask my neighbors, if any, if the Gen would bother them during certain hours. I always try to recharge in the middle of the day when it's less likely to bother someone. Some camp sites are rather close to each other.
