Girard Tankless Water Heater No Longer Recommend
If you are familiar with my posts you may remember that we recently sold our old rig and bought a new one. On the old rig we installed a Girard tankless water heater years ago and used/ enjoyed it immensely. The new rig had a standard Atwood DSI unit so we elected to buy a new Girard tankless to replace it. The new unit has been in service for just over 1 week now.
The day after installation we noticed a water leak from the water heater. I assumed that the water connections were not tight (meaning I assumed it was installer error). After taking a closer look it turned out that it was a defective unit. The hot water outlet/ pressure relief line was leaking at one of the copper welds. I called Girard's support line and they offered to send out a replacement part.
We are on the road and the only address we had for package delivery was a UPS customer center. They decided to send it FedEx anyways... yep did not arrive. Yesterday (Wednesday) I called them back and this time they overnighted it via UPS. Problem solved.
Except in the meantime a second and unrelated component has now failed. This AM I woke up and found that the heater would not fire up. Called them again and they diagnosed the problem as a bad sensor and offered to send out another replacement part.
Over the last few months I have occasionally read about people having problems with these units. Apparently, judging from my experience, there are some real problems with the product. At this point in time I retract my previous positive remarks and advise anyone considering the unit to find an alternative.
I will keep you posted as to my results with all this warranty work.
