GM Ignition Sensor Fuse

I just installed a remote switch in my 2012 Malibu for the "Ignition Sensor" fuse. (Needs to be pulled for towing, per the owner's manual.) It doesn't seem to make a difference whether the fuse is "in or out", the car starts and seems to run just fine. Are there any GM experts on here that can explain why that fuse needs to be pulled when towing, or did I screw up when installing the switch. I have the same setup as the Roadmaster remote switch, except I went to Radio Shack and paid WAY less for all the parts and pieces. Thanks

  • FWIW, my 2007 HHR still starts...but runs for just a little while. It is a 2AMP fuse that has to be pulled...and that shuts off the dash and, I presume the computer(s).
The milage while being towed does not register. Sounds what you did was OK.

Thanks Hank & Teddy. That makes sense, and makes me feel better. I'll recheck what I did, but I'm pretty confident that it's correct. (Just noticed that I need to update my signature, and get rid of the '03 Cavalier - that's my grand-son's car now.)

Sounds like you have it right. You'll notice you don't have the key buzzer, key in driver's door open, when switch is off. You should also see that turning key to ACC with switch off does not turn on accessories like radio, etc.

  • I installed the switch on our 07 Malibu. It works the same way and that's how it's supposed to work. You have to put the key in and turn it at least to ACC position to shift out of park and into neutral. You can't remove the key until the trans is back in park. The switch or pulling the fuse disables the sensing of the key and disables the ACC position so the battery won't be drained while towing.
  • I'd check what you did. When I pull my fuse, the car will not start, the key cannot be removed, and the power is removed from the ignition system. JM2¢...
