As a kid in 1959 I remember there were only a few boardwalks. For the most part you had to stay on a path marked by signs or rocks. It was easy to get close to the geothermal features. One of the little girls in our party backed up while we were viewing one of the geysers and her heel dropped into a small mud pot. She had second degree burns.
Later trips to Yellowstone and the boardwalks had been put in place; folks still seem to ignore the warnings.
