I also check the taillights on my trailer every time I hook up. I just turn on the emergency flasher and walk behind the trailer to make sure they are working.
I also check the lights every time I hook up. I do it by turning on the flasher and the parking lights in the TV. That way bth filaments in the taillights are lit up as well as the markers.
I also always have the headlights on while towing. Having the markers visible on in the mirrors is a good indicator that the cable has not somehow become detached from the truck. (had that happen once - no lights and no brakes.)
