Good Sam ERS Surprise

Which level of Roadside Assistance did he have?

There are several levels in all Roadside Assistance plans - and it is definitely worth the extra costs to pay for the Platinum (or similar name) Top Level of service.

Good Sam offers an Auto only plan, Auto + RV standard and Auto + RV Platinum plans.

Flat Tire Repair at no additional costs is included in the Standard plan

Thank you for all of the posts. I just wanted to clarify that tire repairs are not covered under any level of Good Sam Roadside Assistance. Due to safety and liability issues GS Roadside Assistance doesn't offer tire repair service. In addition the benefits regarding flat tires are the same regardless of program level. I've provided the verbiage from the member benefit brochure for standard and a link to the benefit brochures below.

"Flat Tire Service
A service technician will replace a flat tire
with your inflated spare or we’ll tow your
vehicle to the nearest professional service
center. On occasion and whenever possible,
we will make arrangements for the member to
purchase a tire(s) for delivery to the disablement scene. In these
cases Good Sam Roadside Assistance will pay for delivery of tire
only, member is responsible for all additional costs including cost
of tire(s), mounting, balancing, other parts or labor, tax and any
other fees. Note: Does not include seasonal tire changes. Member
responsible for parts and labor."

The high cost does not surprise, and neither does the cost to pay a repairman to come to your house on the weekend. Convenience = $$$

Let me clarify my original post. All the road service did was change the tire and nothing else. Sorry for the confusion. The tire that went flat actually had one of the steel belts beginning to come out of the sidewall. He was very fortunate he didn't have a blowout on the way to the campground.

I am certainly not defending Good Sam, but this story is beginning to develop many facets. I have used GS roadside assistance for a tire change on my car. No complaint. I would expect the tire change to be included in roadside assistance if you have a mountable spare...many of us don't. Repairing a tire would be like any other roadside "repair" not required to get you to safety, and would be out of pocket. But who would repair a tire with a steel belt showing? The technician could and would be held liable if he repaired the tire and it blew on the way to the next stop. I don't believe any legitimate shop will repair a tire with sidewall damage. I just think there are some things missing. I have no doubt the contracted roadside assistance shop padded their profits a bit.

Wonder why the guy paid?
I would have told the provider to hit the road!

Not many facets at all. Roadside service came out, took off the flat tire, put on the spare tire, presented my friend with a bill.

Repairing a tire has nothing to do with this thread. All they did was put the spare on. See OP's second post.
