I have learned after years of using a GPS to also carry a map with me. Out in the desert, I've been told to turn on roads that are nothing more than dirt tracks. I've read of folks getting so lost they end up dying and occasionally the thing will get lost and out of the blue tell me to make "the next legal U-turn" I often use the option of "less freeways" so you might want to check to see what your default setting is. If its less freeways, it might route you differently.
