Thanks for the quick response.
We are considering one of the AK trips and this being a first trip of this magnitude and through another country we want it to be an enjoyable experience. I like the knowledge, the resource base and the planning that seems to be available through Fantasy.
If going to Alaska don't bother with a tour. You can easily do it on your own. You will meet up with folks time after time along your trip. The roads are fine. Yes, there will be rough construction areas but you find this in the lower 48, also. You can't get lost. Not many roads to take. :)
I suggest checking in over on the Alaska forum. Purchase the Milepost for history and maps and Mike and Terri Church's book 'Alaskan Camping" which includes Canada and the Yukon, also.
Going on your own you can stop when you want and where you want. If you don't like a place you can move on and if you like it you can stay as long as you want.
You don't need a ton of reservations so that you have to have a schedule. Most people only make them for the July 4 weekend and for camping in Denali Nat'l Park. For those we only made them 3 weeks prior as we were traveling so we could better judge when we'd be there.
Pull in early afternoon and you'll get a spot in a RV park. We boondocked a lot at gorgeous spots, many overlooking a river or lake. The spots are all in the Church's book.
It really is an easy trip.
