Gooseneck or Reese hitch?

Our new Gas 2 wheel drive F-350 will be able to tow 12,400 max loaded trailer weight and has a payload of 4,420lbs (the 5'er we are considering would have a gvwr of under 2k lbs. and gvwr of less than 11,900 lbs. Based on that....

I hear that gooseneck can't tow as much as a Reese hitch, but if the max tow for a gooseneck is about what our gross tow rating for the truck is anyhow, does it come down to which one would make the towing and hookup easier on the driver?

The Ford dealer can install either the ball for the gooseneck or the Reese. What can others share here that can help us decide which one to consider?

Thanks

  • I have the factory prep on my 2012 F350 and the Reese hitch. Four pins (1 each corner) rotate via handle on each and lock the pins in place. Rotate the handles back and you can lift the hitch out of the truck leaving a flat bed. Pull 2 pins and remove the top section, then remove the bottom section. Plastic plugs provided to plug the holes.
  • Does the Reese hitch come out and reinstall easily? For example, if we need to haul lumber in our truck, will it be hard to take the hitch out? Thanks
  • The Reese 5th Wheel hitch is easier to hook-up as long as you're close the "V" will guide the King Pin in and no safety chains required.
