Thank you all for your kindness and supportive words. I really do appreciate every one of you. After doing some research about this mitral valve repair, I think we are going to gather DHs medical records and send them to Cleveland Clinic. We'll still go for the local surgical consult but I think CC might be exactly where we need to go, since they are so experienced. With DHs general poor health we need to find him the best doctors we can.
The jury is still out on the cruise. Some of the reading I've done in the last 24 hours recommends getting this surgery done quickly after the diagnosis of severe mitral regurgitation. I'm not sure how soon is "quickly" but I'm guessing it does NOT mean "wait until September." It looks like the recovery is about 8-12 weeks, so DH would not have enough time to have surgery and recover fully before we leave for Alaska. I'm going to hold out hope for the cruise until we find out otherwise.
If we have to cancel this cruise I think we will try to plan something else. We already have tickets to Seattle--my sister lives there; Perhaps if it is safe for him to fly we'll still go there and just not go on the cruise. Another thought is that we could go to Disney World (which we love, love, love!) for a few days. It's about 8 hours drive from us, or 1.5hr flight. Heck, if we're going to go up to Cleveland we might as well see some of Kentucky on our way up there.
I hate this sitting-in-limbo-waiting-for-something-to-happen. I'm an old nurse--I want to get in there and DO SOMETHING!
