I'm sorry for you and your family, for this is truly an emotionally difficult time. Grief is normal and understandable, and I hope you will find a minister or someone in your area who has some training in helping people with their times of grief.
In this fallen world, we all have a terminal condition. It can be downright scary to think of soon being without the one you love, and for him it may be scary because of not knowing how much discomfort he may have to deal with in the interim. The minister can help you and your family sort through your emotions, and your medical professionals can reassure him about what they can do to keep him in relative comfort. Know that people are praying for you, though. And know that you have the blessed hope of seeing one another again in a place without pain or tears.
My wife has dreams and visions sometimes. A man in our church, a friend of ours, had a serious heart condition (disabling) and one day he passed on. His wife knew it could happen at any time, yet it still grieved her of course to be without him. A couple of weeks went by, and my wife had a dream in which she was in heaven and saw the man there, happily building a house... something he had longed to do but could not do here. He was smiling and laughing with others all around, working together. The strangest thing, my wife says, was that his long, heavy beard (the only way we had ever seen him) was gone and yet my wife recognized him right off! DW told his widow all about what she saw, described everything, and she was greatly comforted. It eased her mind knowing he was so happy and joyful.
Be at peace. All will be well, eventually. And having advance notice does hold some advantages... time to set things in order.
