It is a GMC Canyon. And because GM hardly ever updates the look of their trucks, it is hard to tell what year it might be. But, they did offer a 5.3 in the last few years.

In the areas I like to roam it's quite common to see spare tires carried on the roof of the vehicle. Most of the time though, it's because it's a lifted SUV or Jeep type vehicle with oversized tires and no other place to carry them. In the pickups the spare is generally in the bed. Since he's towing a fiver it's easy to see why he decided to go the roof rack mount.

In looking at the photo again, it appears that rear stabilizer jack isn't retracted all the way and could at a higher than normal risk for dragging if he gets in uneven terrain. It tends to get expensive when you hit the ground with them.

I'd move the spares forward a bit & put more weight on the front axle.

at least there smart enough to carry a spare.
