Being in the same situation as you, first trip without my wife, a couple of observations. Take it easy and don't try to over think things and allow enough time to stop if you need to. Hopefully, your first trip is to a location you are familiar with at least a little.
Dogs are adaptable, at least I hope they are. I leave this morning with a new to me 4 month old puppy. We are only going 325 miles total and I do not have any time pressure. My last dog had 120,000 miles on him so this one will have to get use to running in fields, school yards, dog parks, beachs, or wherever we need to. Use the map, use the mapping software, use the gps, use fellow travelers, use whatever you need to in order for your comfort level to reach your safe zone.
