I think both are valuable and can be used together.
My problem with GPS is you can travel the country coast to coast, not get lost, but never really have a mental picture of where you are on the planet. Some folks maybe don't need to know where they are, but for me, knowing the bigger picture and what is coming up ahead is part of the enjoyment of travelling. Oh, heck...I LOVE maps. :)
