Rule #1 - never trust a GPS to get you anywhere. Plan your route with an Atlas and/or maps, then if the GPS comes up with the same route, use it as you travel.
I travel by myself without a co-pilot. I use Garmin BaseCamp (which replaced MapSorce) to plan my trip on the computer with the aid of paper maps. This way I can zoom in on an intersection or research a campground on the computer. I them add "waypoints" to make sure the GPS will take me where I want to go. I plan my trip in one day segments name -- nameing each days trip with something like 001 TX, 002 UT, 003 SideTrip. Notice the different colors on the map. This is a view zoomed out to show a 6 months trip. I can always zoom in to see the details. I often plan fuel stops at Flying J or other truck stops so I know I can get in an out without any trouble. Sometime I use Google Earth to get an actual view of an intersection or campground. Once I have the trip planned, I them upload it to my Garmin StreetPilot 2720.
Sometime I plan a long trip with very few details, and then update the master plan with details as I get close to the location. This give me something to do sitting in the campground at night before my next leg of the trip.
Garmin no longer makes the SP 2720 but I have purchased 2 extra spare ones on eBay for about $50.00 each. I Love the SP 2720 because it is so easy to upload my trips from the computer to the SP 2720.
