GPS strikes again

Last summer, a buddy of mine from Atlanta had two weeks vacation and he wanted to do a 'cross country drive'. So, I said that I need to go to California to check on the house as I had new air units put in.

He drives up to TN and off we go out I-40 in my Land Rover. We get to Albuquerque on I-40 and the whole interstate is shut down west of town. My Land Rover has navigation but I wasn't sure exactly how to find a 'way around' so I went to a Pilot station and bought a new spiral-ringed map.

The girl at the counter said 'people still buy maps'? I laughed and said I like to look at the whole picture at one time and look at different routes.

We ended up going down I-25 south but turned off on hwy 60 to head west. Hwy 60 is two lane all the way to Phoenix but what a nice way to go as I've never been. Beautiful scenery.

If I had taken I-25 south to I-10 west, it would have taken us 100 miles out of the way.

Yes they followed the GPS when they should t have, but turned around to go back. So barring the GPS deal they did everything right. Maybe they should’ve had water and food, but they believed they were heading to a lake via an easy route!

Maybe that flat happened when they drove over that 18" drop off. You'd think they'd have been smart enough to turn around before they drove over that.

Well, I know that a lot of newer cars don't come with spares, but it might not occur to me that a rental wouldn't, simply because all my vehicles that I drive all the time do have spares. I could also be guilty of overlooking that fact.

The article said the road had 18” drop offs. They never said if the Chrysler Pacifica drove down those!

It was bad judgment all around!

"The dirt road that winds through a small canyon has large rocks and 18-inch drops at some points, Alldredge said." That, to me, describes a road with 18" drops in the driving part of the road. I do agree, the couple were guilty of being pretty stupid.

We used to work in some pretty tough places in far flung countries..

The standing joke was that the 2 best off-road vehicles in the world, bar none, were rented cars and company cars!

Nothing worse than an old fool except an old stubborn fool. This guy was the latter. :R

I guess, because of age, they couldn't access that flowing stream just a few feet from their car. The article says they drank out of mud puddles. If I was in that predicament and, after a day with no water, I would have been pulling wire to make a rope to get water out of that stream.

I hope this will be a lesson learned and the couple will know their limitations.

My GPS has never made me turn down a road that I didn't want to go on.
