People have forgotten that the purpose of the death penalty is to uphold the sanctity of life. The idea is, "You take a life, you forfeit your life." Sadly, the "game" of trial by a jury of your peers has become one of winning at all costs, not finding the truth. I think in the long run, everyone loses-even the person who commits the crime.
The idea of the Penitentiary was to make the convicted felon sit and ponder his crime and come to the point of penance. It was a nice sentiment but it never worked. Now they are just warehouses where criminals can hone their craft.
