I wanted to be, purchased a BaoFeng radio and messed around with it. Got the general license and a Yaesu FT 8800 that has an antenna set up in the house as well as the tow rig. Heck I even purchased another BaoFeng. Unfortunately I lost interest, I'm not sure what guys that don't know each other talk about over open airwaves but if I wanted to know the weather somewhere I would google it. I messed around on the IRLP network some but got tired of listening to the truckers wine about other drivers or the weather.
I originally got into Ham for emergency communications but after seeing the lack of traffic on the airwaves, lack of remote access and learning about the Delorme Inreach satellite communicator I found the Ham to be a very poor choice. I do see the value of the Ham radio during a major weather event or the end of the world so I turn one of mine on every once in awhile just to keep up with it.
