There are more options if there is a passenger in the vehicle trying to give the warning.
On my own I was able to get the attention of a trucker whose rear door was half way open. I pulled up a little bit ahead of the truck, honked my horn repeatedly and rolled my passenger window up and down.
It got the truckers attention and he pulled over.
About 5 years ago driving on the TCH between Revelstoke and Golden, heading West (downhill) there was an older couple pulling a 5er. One of their brakes appeared to have seized. Luckily there was a passenger in our RV. We pulled alongside at the next passing lane and held up a sign done with crayon on craft paper. It just said BRAKES!, while honking.
