Happy Camper Tank Additive

When ever the subject of black tanks come up, someone always pipes in with using Happy Camper black tank additive for a solution to keep the tank and sensors operational. And....during the same conversation, someone else will pipe in with just using detergent and water softener.

I heard today that Happy Camper is just detergent and water softener mix together in one application.

Is anyone versed enough with Happy Camper to confirm or dispel this info?

  • Well FWIW I tried Happy Campers a few years ago and found it didn't work at all. :( To be fair, I seem to recall that to work effectively Happy Campers needs time to work, time I probably didn't give it as I service my tanks here at the house using my Poop Cannon after each trip. I now instead use Walex Porta Pak which has proven effective regardless of how briefly it may be in the tank. Frankly, as long the product I'm using doesn't contain formaldehyde I really don't care what's in it as long as it works ... and Walex Porta Pak has for me. :B

My take on those that think their black tank does not sink

Either you have a radically different metabolism than everybody else
    Or
    You have a defective nose

Water alone does not keep poop from stinking

You should have a valve on your toilet and a vent on your roof. There will be no smell in the bathroom. Trust me. I have a good nose and hate smells. We didn't have smells with using just water.

I don't have a problem with a smell in the bathroom. It is when setting outside on a wind free day (or near wind free) and the vent on the roof causes the smell. Because the smell is heavier then air it drops down the side of the TT and makes the whole area smell bad. And, yes some of this smell gets inside too.

Doesn't happen very often. Seem like conditions have to be just right. It's almost like the black tank "burps" and if the wind is just wrong there will be a smell for a little while. There is always a little wind so the smell dissipates after awhile.
  • No smell here either. Just lots of water and no problem in 5 1/2 yrs full-time. Don't use the fan above the toilet though - it will pull smells up from the tank when you flush. If you smell stuff other than momentarily, there is something wrong.
  • Poop stinks..ain't no doubt about it

Poop stinking INSIDE an RV is because SOMETHING is broken....vapor barriers

Chemicals just make poop smell like a chemical

My poop stinks...but I do NOT have poop smells inside my RVs because the vapor barriers work (or I fix if broken)

I don't KEEP my poop long. I dump my tanks when full which is close to every 7 days on avg.
    So I just use water

Now as to Happy Camper and that MSDS showing it's 100% Zinc

Zinc Chloride has been used for years as a 'mist' over waste treatment sludge ponds for odor control.
Zinc also is used in many underarm deodorant and as a 'supplement' for BO

So guess it should work in waste tank.
I don't know...I don't smell mine and am not going to start sniffing them
  • So what's the lesson learned here?

If you smell tank odors Happy Camper works as well or better then the alternatives at masking it. If you do not get odors, then why bother with adding anything, save your money.

Caveat - given sufficient time to work. :W
