- pkunkExplorerI sold quite a few of those as a VW salesman in the mid '60's. That one with the 'pop top' roof can be no later than 1966 as it still had the split windshield. '67 marked the debut of the T2 bus and Westphalia raised the roof with the rear hinged extension which was considerably larger.
- B_O__PlentyExplorer IIThose are really cool but I always wanted one...Don't try to bring that thing in here, it's more than 10 years old!
B.O. - fatmanobxExplorerMy first wife and I had one back in the late 60's..It was a 65 md. and we used it all the time out on Padre Island Tx...great times...
- campiglooExplorerNice restore. I had 2 of them. My first was a sixty-seven. First vehicle I had with cruise control.....a brick on the pedal. Second was a camper model. It had a surprisingly well thought out floor plan.
- BurbManExplorer IIWow brings back memories! Those air cooled flat fours were good for what, about 60HP? I like the tool box and the fire extinguisher in the pic, guy travels smart....
I f I recall, the pop-up only came up in the back so it was at an angle when opened, and I don't think the luggage racks are original, but nice resto-mod!
Sure beats seeing this when you're camping: - Fish__n___GritsExplorerWe saw an orange one in the campground at Stone Mountain four years ago. It looked in mint condition. First one I'd seen in ages. A buddy and I put a Porche engine in his in Hawaii in the 60's. What a sleeper!
- sd1209ExplorerBrings back memories.....Buddy of mine and I drove his 1959 VW camper van from SoCal to Fla to scuba dive after grad HS in 1967, just before going into the service of Uncle Sam.....Notice the 2nd picture, the windows opened like that on the van we drove...Got so hot in TX/Fla we drove for many miles with the windows propped open.....
That van would do about 65 top speed, as I remember the HP was about 36.....The brakes were so poor you had to think waaaay ahead in order to stop safely....We listened to the music of the 60's all across the USA and back...cool trip and fond memories........
Great picture...Thanks..... - ValkyriebushExplorer IIWhen I live in France as a kid my Dad bought a brand new 9 passenger VW Van in Germany for $1800.00 (1964) prior to returning to the US. I still remember the horrible trip after picking it up and traveling in it from NY to Washington, State. It was not a camper and with five kids we did not do hotels and restaurants! lol
- MackteeExplorerThe micro bus I have seen a few of them, but I haven't seen a pop top in 40years. Thanks for sharing. Macktee
- Captain_HappyExplorerDon't laugh, they may make a big comeback when fuel prices go up even more then they are now. I sure remember these things from back in the 60's & 70's.
