We had about an 8 foot alligator crawl within 50 feet of our site in Florida last year but they are so common here that we don't get too excited just be careful.
The only dangerous "confrontation" I can remember was on a trout fishing camping trip in Montana. Early one morning I climbed a small hill behind the camp to watch the sun come up over the mountains. While sitting down I heard something behind and above me and turned to see a black bear about 50 yards away feeding on berries, cool I thought. Then I hear something below be, turn, and and see two small cubs about 50 yards below me, now I am between mom and her cubs, not cool! I got up slowly and started to move parallel across the hill to get out of that position when I see another bear about twice the size of the mom blocking that direction. Luckily I was able to reverse course and quietly move out of the area on somewhat shaky legs. When I got back to camp the guide says "oh yea I meant to tell you'll that the bears are out feeding on berries now"
