I can see the guy's concern. He has no idea that you actually know what you're doing, and for all he knows you are going to try and run both your ac's, water heater, and microwave while your wife is using the hair dryer. All on 30 amp service because you're too cheap to spring for 50 amp service.
Insisting is a bit much maybe but can't blame a guy for trying to protect his investment.
It's tough to come right out and ask someone "Are you one of the smart ones, or one of the stupid ones?". :)
