hauling extra gas

My Nissan Titan gas model has a 24 gallon tank. Not much when you're towing and getting 9mpg. Was wondering if anyone uses something like this to haul extra gas. Would use it for emergencies, fuel generator of occassionally refuel truck from bed when not at a gas station. Have any of you used something like this:https://www.amazon.com/DuraMax-Fluid-Transfer-14-Gallon-Rolling/dp/B000MT94QA/ref=pd_ys_c_rfy_15706941_1?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B000MT94QA&pd_rd_r=CPNRRYXSZVMDFXCB6VC0&pd_rd_w=ZLZjV&pd_rd_wg=FnatA&psc=1&refRID=6807GWQMYFB0NXPYPYZ9 Would it be safe if sercured in the bed?

  • I carry my extra fuel for the chainsaw and genny in Rotopax fuel containers. Leaproof, fume free and easy to handle. The come in any size up to 5 gallon and have mounts to mount just about anywhere.
  • Carrying gas in plastic containers is not a risk I would take for my family??
Have a larger certified fuel tank installed??
  • I like to get out and stretch, etc, every 200 miles or so anyway.
  • The range your talking about would be a real pain on a long trip. I'd buy a tool/fuel box combo, pricey but well worth it, can move to a new truck if needed. I was able to go from 250 to 300 miles while towing, found a used 50 gallon tool/fuel box and increased my mileage to 800+ between fill ups.

That certainly would have been nice to have when I left FL for Hurricane Irma. I will not leave again without having 2 or 3, at least, 2 gal. gas cans. I cannot lift a 5 gallon by myself. Gas was very hard to find along the way and with a 31' fiver, I would have basically unhooked the fiver somewhere, go fill with gas (or how much they allowed?) and go back and rehook . I like this idea.

.. I hope you don't ever need it again.. That must have been very stressful for all.

  • There is the need to carry extra gasoline, and there is the physiological need to carry extra gasoline. Which need do you have? Rare in the lower 48 for need one. Both “needs” increase the danger inherent in gasoline.
  • I have carried a lot of gas in the back of my trucks and sometimes in a car. I don't feel any of it is safe if there was a bad crash. That being said I would just get a nice gas can and strap it in real well for the generator. Do you feel that you really need to carry that much gas for the fear of running out?
