My FIL (now retired) owned an oil/gas hotshot company in Wyoming, and he looked into hauling RVs as a way to make money during the times oil/gas wasn't doing as well. He obviously already had an appropriate tow vehicle. He found the same things you did... relatively pretty easy money for the "to" trip... harder part was finding something to haul back to pick up the next trailer so he made money both ways. In the end he found that he would still make a little money even with just the one way trip, but not enough to make it worth being gone from his home base for so long, potentially missing out on the more lucrative oil/gas jobs he would still get occasionally.
