Regarding return loads or "Backhauls", this is obviously the goal but is much much harder to arrange than is apparent. Further your lease is exclusive so any load you do arrange has to be run through the company you are lease to. You are runnuing under their DOT number and therefore it has to go through them. They take a small cut.
You must have Commercial insurance and I could not find any "regular" insurance company that would write the policy Horizon demanded. So I like most go through a fully commercial company that Horizon works with. It cost about $250/month. As it turns out the insurance was one of the cheapest things on a per mile basis.
By the way I did somewhere over 11,000 miles in 28 days of doing it and that included 5 days of not running.
Yes some do make a living at it, but those I talked to all had sleepers, could haul any type of trailer, a class A CDL, lived close to northern Indiana and tended to do short 1 or 2 day trips. Some LIVE in their trucks.
