Hawkshead TPMS

I recently purchased a pre-owned class A motorhome that came equipped with a Hawkshead TPMS. After a couple of months of my using the coach I found that no matter where I put the receiver it was not picking up the transmitters. When I called them they told me that I would need to replace the receiver and add a signal booster. Before I spent the money for this I was wondering if anyone else has had this kind of problem with this or any other manufacturer. I was also wondering if anyone else had any dealings with this company and how good they are.
  • I have a 507 TST Flow thru.
It worked perfect during a 600 mile trip in spring. I had problems with it on a recent 1200 mile trip. I called TST and they recommended a signal booster($59)and I bought it. The truck is sitting about 35 feet from the fifth right now and everything working good.

    I guess time will tell.
  • I bought a HH HD for our vintage 24ft class C a few years ago. It worked great the first year, less so after that - lots of random problems with not picking up sensors. We only use the RV 2 or 3 times a year - one trip of 2-3 weeks and one or two long weekends.
Replacing sensor batteries didn't seem to help, nor did proximity to the sensors. While the performance degraded, I also noticed that the receiver would operate for shorter and shorter durations without external power.
I eventually concluded that my leaving the receiver in the RV year round (in Calgary) without being connected to power for many months was damaging the receiver's rechargeable battery. Last year I kept the receiver in the house and connected to power, and it worked significantly better but not perfectly for our 3-week road trip. I suspect that the HH units require a battery in top condition in order to work more reliably.
When the HH unit connects to the sensors reliably, it works well and the temperature sensors really saved us a couple of times - my wife tends to over-use the brakes when driving in hilly areas.
We just bought a new Class A and I started doing research on what kind of new TPMS to get for it. So difficult to tell what is indeed the best and by what margin.
I think I'm going to try replacing the receiver and sensor batteries on my HH and running it on my Subaru for a few months. If it performs well, I'll probably stick with the HH and add a booster - partly to make it more reliable but also because we'll likely start pulling a toad. If it still has reliability issues with a new battery, I'll keep looking elsewhere...

Don't know anything about Hawkshead, but TST and Pressure Pro are 2 time-tested units with a big following and good customer support. I've had the TST 507 for about 3 years and with my 35 ft trailer, I'm right at the limit where a repeater is "almost" necessary. I moved the receiver up higher on the dash and have had no problems.
  • I have a Tire Tracker ( same as HH ) on my Lazy Daze, it is not wort throwing away ! I just bought another coach it came with a HH, (in a bag) the previous owner said he had nothing but trouble with it and just tried to keep 4 sensors working on the towed with no luck.

    I think I'll try a Pressure Pro.
  • First thing. Did you put new batteries in the transmitters?
    Art.
  • We tried a Hawkshead for awhile...had the same issue even after adding the booster. Went back to using Pressure Pro and have never had any problem with it reading even without a booster.
  • If you have to pay for a new receiver and a booster, you would be better off buying a new TST TMPS and every thing will be new. You should not need a booster in a MH. I don't need a booster with my truck and 5er, I have the TST 507 system. :)
