Uhhhhhh... you forgot to mention the idling diesel.
I am one with an idling diesel. You need to keep in mind that when I pull into a campground and back my trailer in the exhaust temperature does increase to about 450*. Without idling to cool the exhaust down (time depends on how warm everything is, how hard the engine is worked prior to arriving, etc) the turbo is spinning about 10,000 rpms and shutting it down hot causes the oil flow to stop while the turbo is still spinning and the heat will cause the oil to burn (coke) around the bearings and cause a premature turbo failure. If you are next to me when I pull in I will shut the engine down soon as I arrive PROVIDED you or anyone else puts $1000 in my hand because it will cost me more than that to replace the turbo. Now, I don't let it sit and idle for hours but I also watch the pyrometer and soon as I can I shut it down.
The old days of "Turbo Seizure" have been corrected with direct oiling, plus,,, unless you are at freeway speeds when you get to your site,, or you have to back up an10% grade to park your trailer, there really is no good reason to Idle a diesel in a campground!! You most likely have a good fifteen to twenty minutes from time of arrival at the front gate to cool your truck down.. You know, most campground speeds are anywhere from 5 to 15 mph, less than 1500 rpm to cool 'er down, then stopping, letting the kids and dawg out,,surveying your site, discussing where and when and how to park it,,usually an easy idle back with a few pull ups and re-adjustments.
My point is not the idling diesel,,although I agreed some take it to extreme, its the headlights,,, I understand its easier on a diesel to leave it running rather than start and stop,, (had '90 F350,7.3 twin Banks turbo's,five speed with gear vendor,4:56 rear 4x4 crew cab, two Pyro's, yes you drive by temp and shut down by temp) No issue.. Had a camper pull in, had a fiver, big Dodge diesel, he pulled up got lined up, put it in reverse, shut headlights to parking lights, turned on two nice back up lights on his fiver, and slipped right in, one shot!! Left it idling, parking lights on, very nicely done!! Was a pleasure to watch!! Just saying,, isn't that hard..
