I have a problem very much like you describe. I went on beta blockers for a while but they seem to drag me down. Caffeine or any other stimulant is off limits for me and I know every time I happen to get a stimulant that is hidden in food. With caution in diet I was able to drop the beta blockers with doctors approval.

YOU NEED TO SEE A MD. IT COULD BE ATRIAL FIB which is a serious problem. Your "TEND to cough a couple of times and it ceases" is telling to me and worries me.

Interesting. I experienced the very same symptoms during my 40's and 50's. Happened once every month or three.....never seemed to cause problems beyond the moment. Maybe experienced a few episodes in last several years. I tend to cough a couple times and it ceases.
