Based on that info, I would swag the 3.42 ratio with the HD cooling. IE the actual number for that rig is the first one, with overall options later.
Even still, if it has the 3.08, with the 5.3, this should not be an issue with the 6s- auto. That has a 4.10 first gear, times 3.08 axel, you have an overall low of 12.63 vs back in the day with a 4 or three sp which had a first gear of 3.08 or 2.48, times a 3.08 you had a 7.64 or 9.49 to one.
I would agree that you are thinking too much. I would probably lock myself in 4th ie direct gear, stay out of od or dod unless going downhill. Even with the 3.42's. If you had 4.10 gears in the axels, od would be generally speaking usable. But with that motor wanting to rev to get its power, you will probably want to be at or just over 2000 rpm doing 60 on the freeway.
