Lots of folks figure they know what is good for everyone else when it comes to EW decisions. Unfortunately, this is a highly personal decision, based on one's financial situation and tolerance for risk.
In our case, we were buying our first DP, which was 6 years old. We did our homework and found our 2003 Executive, which appeared to be in wonderful condition! It came with all maintenance records, looked pristine, inside and out, with 63,000mi on it. All of that being said, this was our first DP and first "higher end" rig of any type. No matter how much research and inspecting we did, we had no prior experience with such a rig. We also knew that a catastrophic failure of engine or transmission could run well over $10,000 in repairs cost. We did not want to chance the possibility of making monthly loan payments on a coach that was dead in our driveway and un-usable.
So, we decided that a shorter, 2-year EW was what WE WANTED TO DO. We chose XTRA-RIDE PLATINUM Coverage, which was not inexpensive, but offers terrific coverage. Now, we are looking at the end of our coverage in September. We have NOT recovered our premium in repairs, but I'm totally comfortable with that. We have been thrilled with the two issues that have required coverage. We had a alternator fail and Xtra-Ride helped us locate a mobile repair service that came out and replaced the unit onsite. We paid him our deductible and off he went!
Now, in September, I'll have a decision to make. Will not be looking at a full coverage policy, but with a DP, MIGHT be interested in a drivetrain-only coverage policy. I'll have to see what the cost is for the coverage I desire.
