When you arrived at your camp site did you see any other campers around, especially the ones who may have witnessed you leave your site on the ATV?
Vigilance and observation starts before you get to your site. You may get a "tingle" on the hairs on the back of your neck if you actually take the time to look around. Maybe enough of a "tingle" that you would choose NOT to use this particular site/campground. Gut feelings are real for most folks.
In the event you did have a "tingle", but chose to still camp at this site/campground, it would not hurt to jot down a few plate / tag numbers.
Is someone "staring" at you or what you own more than what happens normally? If so, a smile or friendly wave of the hand all the while you are memorizing identifies for later may help you recover your property in the event that a theft does occur.
A very high percentage of campers are honest, trustworthy, and mostly mind their own business. It still only takes a few bad apples to make a pleasant camping trip turn into one that becomes not so much fun. Camping in the mountains or in remote areas means you must take charge of your own protection. That does not necessary mean, you must carry a firearm. It only means that one must be aware of their surroundings by actively looking at what is around you and listen to any "gut" feelings.
Sad to hear that you had a bad experience.
