Hidden Costs of RVing

Can anyone top this? We've had 29 RVs (of every type) in 41 years and have loved every one of them (for a short time). We truly believe we have kept the RV dealers in business through all these years.

We towed our fiver with a Volvo VN 610 Semi after spending $1,700. in repairs to our F 350. Four months before selling the Volvo and leaving our lifestyle to settle down, we invested over $4,000 in new injectors and an oil change. That doesn't count the $10,000 in replacing 6 tires, repairing a trans shifter, a complete set of brakes and drums, a new RV fridge and 3 awnings, plus losing over $10,000. when we sold the Volvo. . .:S

I have two hobbies. Rving and golf. If I drove the RV like I drive a golf ball, I'd have sliced it into a tree before I got out of the dealer's parking lot.

Hear you on that one! I was just about to sign on the dotted line to purchase a home in Georgia....until I read RIGHT HERE ON THE FORUM how much plates cost in Georgia. BTW: Thank you forum!

In Georgia the cost of plates are determined by the value of your vehicles. I was looking at $3,000+ every year just to put a tin plate on my vehicles.

When I went full time I had a case of the assumed that all the states were roughly the same as my home state regarding just about everything. How wrong could I have been! Lot's of homework is needed! :B

The prior RV was a shock when we went for the plates. Between that 1350 a year, insurance 500, and storage at 400 we were paying out close to 45 a week wether we used it our not.

I will put it this way, I used to own a sailboat and we all know the story about boat and that hole in the water, my RV trailer is the same way but we love our toys and will pay what it takes to enjoy them and take care of them, toys toys toys!

For us it was making the rig boondocking worthy. We bought thinking that after roughing it forever that we would go with the trailer and hook ups. One trip in campgrounds and we realized they were not for us. Since then it's been solar, generator, battery, extra water, LEDs, inverter, whatever it takes to go back up into the hills and still feel like we have hook ups.

The trade off is no CG fees. :)

Thankful for that report Super Camper. Until I read your post I was ready to sell out after 25 years of RVing. I just found out I can't afford it.
