High and Low settings for TST Tire Monitoring system

I have the same system. My front tires are recommended at 65 psi, and my rear tires are recommended at 80 psi.

I use 58 psi as the lower limit for my front tires, 10% below 65 psi. I use 72 psi as the lower limit for my rear tires, 10% below the 80 psi.

Since all of the tires have the same sidewall rating, I use 100 psi for all of the tires as the upper limit. That is 20% above the 80 psi of the rear tires, rounded off.

I left the temp setting at the default 158 degrees F.

Coming home from our last camping trip, the TST actually alarmed high temp on the right front tire. It was showing 160 degrees. The right front brake was dragging and heating the wheel. When I stopped, it was smoking. Ford had to replace the right front brake caliper. I wish it had been under warranty, it was about $412.

Thanks for the great, detailed info. Do you recall what the temp was on the other tires as you were going down the road? Just curious.

When the high temp alarmed, the other tires were showing about 115 degrees, if I recall correctly. I did not really make a point of noticing their temperature.

Of course, ambient temperature was above 90 degrees.

TST paid for its self, that wheel could have caught fire.

I told TST exactly that.

Funny thing. The TST receiver's battery failed on that same trip. The TST would work as long as it was plugged in, but would die immediately when unplugged. I called TST to find out what battery it was so I could buy a replacement battery, but TST said that even though it was out of warranty, they would send me a new receiver anyway. During the conversation, I told them that it had saved my bacon that very trip.

I think that the default 158 degrees is a bit too high. If you check the actual tire or wheel temperatures, you will often find them 10+ degrees higher than the sensor is reporting. The sensor is sticking out away and is being cooled by the wind.

Havering installed this system before out 3000 mile trip we just completed, it was either their online video or the printed instructions that noted the 158 degree default is a temp many tire makers use for a max temp before tire failure

That's fine, but the sensor measures, not the tire temperature, but the temperature of itself.
