This discussion probably may make another In-My-Humble-Opinion subtle point:
Never, never own a TT or 5'er without at least two axles (hence, without at least two tires supporting each side). It seems to me that "Backup and Redundancy" is the name of the game with regards to another tire being able to temporarily take up some of the slack if a tire should fail on something towed. "Temporarily" meaning that even if the remaining tire can't anywhere near carry that side's load for very long - at least the remaining tire will along one to limp along and pull off at a safe spot.
(The OP's example situation may have involved two or more axles on the TT ... but of course the example was making another point.)
