Brian,
I decided on the acme dolly vs flat towing. I ran up to W-S and picked mine up at the factory as well. We pull more than one type of vehicle and I could not see investing the monies required for both vehicles. I got the disc surge brakes as well. It is very light, stores well and it made it thru SC on I-95 without falling apart. That is the true test of any vehicle.
lol...yeah we liked the one we had. Our toad got totaled in a wreck last May. I bought a new car that couldn't be towed (Subaru AWD automatic) on it (nor flat towed). I wanted something AWD because my job is considered critical-essential and I have to be there. We live 35 miles away from my job. That was more important than being able to tow something 4 or 5 times a year. You bring up a good point about more than one vehicle. My wife brought up a good point also. If I had the old car set up for flat tow, then that would of been money I would of been out of. Because the insurance company wasn't going to pay for additional equipment like that. So you are talking baseplate ($400 + about $400 labor). Another thing is that a coworker set up one of his vehicles for flat tow and then 6 months later, they traded in the vehicle. Now they have to pay for the new vehicle. He did keep the baseplate and can sell it. He may be lucky to get half his cost back on it. For us, considering the costs and the little amount that we tow, going back to a dolly is starting to sound a lot better.
