I used to use the 1l or 2l pop bottles when I home brewed beer in my bachelor days.
They travel real well and they kept the bottling time to a minimum.
The only challenge is when you open them. Anything other than a lager or ale will nearly explode when you open. A glass bottle will explode under the pressure that a plastic pop bottle can handle. A pop bottle if I remember correctly has a burst pressure of about 150 Psi.
At a house party, I had a bottle of stout make a 6 foot fountain as it escaped the bottle.
The trick was to crack it then quickly reseal, multiple times, until the original bottling pressure had diminished.
