I will never recommend to anyone that they have their local PD or SO do a routine "house check" as that can and often does lead to a break in. Criminals watch the police and if they see them checking a residence every so often, it tells them it is vacant and becomes a target. Have seen this happen more than once, when I was in patrol.
As an LEO myself, I could see this more in a congested city limits. But he says in the boonies. A check every now and then won't hurt. If a crook is scoping out a place, they will also look for a place with no traffic.
There's nothing that is gonna stop it from happening 100%. Will an alarm help? Possibly, but not always. The only good thing about an alarm and it going off out in the boonies is that the alarm company will notify you when it happens. It won't stop anyone. Might shorten their time in your house, but they will more than likely take or damage your home. That's what insurance is for. Speaking of insurance, if you have an alarm, most insurance companies will give you a discount on your premium. I would still have someone there in the area that could check in on the house and respond if you have an alarm and get things taken care of, like a caretaker. Get storm shutters installed on the house and put the, in place when you leave.
