There is only one thing that can deter determined burglars. Another person that is armed.
They come from centers of operations now like Atlanta and cruise the country side or communities on the radius looking for targets that are isolated and no one at home. The local burglars are pretty well known by Authorities but they have to catch them in the act. Once they have fled the scene your possessions are history. Once they know the pattern they will return.
Gating the access and fencing the perimeter will stop some of the thieves if they can't see your home.
Have a few cattle an electric fence will stop some of the thugs from Atlanta or whatever center they operate from in your area.
Renting if you cannot afford a house sitter is better than nothing from this stand point.
